Day 4

Today was a beautiful Wednesday in the Jinotega area of Nicaragua. We lucky four female team members, Sue, Judy, Joanne and I have the privilege of staying in the “luxury suite” in the new wing of the children's home, where we awoke to the sound of the local rooster who enjoys crowing so much that he starts at about 4 am!

Our commute was a short one today, since the medical clinic was held in the nearby town of Llano de la Tejera. My view of each clinic is from the pharmacy, where my husband Ike serves as pharmacist and Joanne Steindorf and I function as amateur pharmacy techs.  We noticed that the area seemed a little more affluent than the locale of Monday’s clinic. We treated patients with hypertension, diabetes , headaches and other diseases more common in the US.  We also saw the more usual coughs and colds, parasites, and stomach ailments. As always, the children were adorable. They seemed healthier here and better dressed.  Families didn’t seem so large as the ones we saw Monday, but we had some very young infants to fawn over today.

After the clinic many of the team members climbed 1,000 steps to the top of a local mountain to see the cross at the top and the view below.  Others stayed at the children's home for a little relaxation. Ike and I attempted the climb, but “chickened out”  less than halfway up.

As I’m writing this, the team is handing out gift bags assembled by the State High Rotary Club, Interact.  We are thankful to all the students who participated in the project, as well as team members’ churches and other friends who donated other  items for the children's home and clinics.
I’m off to join the fun now.
Please keep us and the people we will see at tomorrow’s clinic and the children of the children's home in your prayers!

The prayer shawls were apprecaited so much today! Special thanks to the many hands that helped to create the beautiful prayer shawls. During our reflection time this evening it was noted that the “prayers are just as important as the pills.” –Celeste Newcomb
